NERPO WELCOMES THE INSTIGATION OF THE VETERINARY AND PARA-VETERINARY PROFESSIONS AMENDMENT BILL
The Chief Executive Officer of NERPO and a member of the Animal Health Forum, Dr. Langelihle Simela has welcomed with great delight the introduction of the Veterinary and Para-Veterinary Professions Amendment Bill. The Bill was tabled in Parliament on Wednesday by the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ms Tina Joemat-Pettersson. Through this Bill, the Minister has called for "performance of compulsory service by certain persons registered in terms of the Act and who have completed the relevant qualifications."
The Minister said it was important for the newly Veterinary Professionals who receive study aid from government to plough back to communities.
“NERPO welcomes and supports this Bill. Through the Animal Health Forum, we have already proactively submitted proposals on where the newly qualified veterinarians could be placed and who would mentor them.” Dr. Simela said.
She further alluded that NERPO has for many years been calling for capacitation and employment of additional Veterinarians to adequately address technical support of smallholder farmers.
“As NERPO we especially requested that there be a veterinarian in each district municipality, who specifically deals with primary animal healthcare for smallholder farmers. There is a dire need for information and assistance with basic animal health care and it would be a relief to see significant strides to fulfill that need. “she concluded.
NERPO is the official mouthpiece of South Africa’s smallholder livestock farmers who are reported to own about 40% cattle, 67% goats & 12% sheep but only accounts for 5% market share in the red production value chain.
