AGRICULTURE PORTFOLIO CHAIR GIVES FARMERS INSURANCE SUBSIDY THUMBS UP
Addressing over 250 livestock small-holder farmers who attended the successful NERPO Conference held at the Pretoria Show Grounds on the 4th and 5th of September, the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Mr. Mlungisi Johnson has welcomed NERPO's proposal for the introduction of insurance subsidy for farmers.
In its 15th Annual General Meeting and Conference, NERPO resolved to fully engage government for the introduction of a farmers insurance subsidy to help redress adversaries confronting the farmers, emerging farmers in particular.
"We welcome and support the founding ideals of this proposal. This proposal, is in my view, addressing bureaucratic and systematic adversaries confronting the farmers. As a committee we take very seriously our role of developing policies that enable growth and development of the agricultural sector" he said
Agriculture's Chairperson has also challenged NERPO to play a more active role in engaging government and parliament in robust debate on challenges facing the small-holder farmers.
He however congratulated and encouraged NERPO to continue mobilizing small-holder farmers and representing their interests for the development of the emerging sector.
"As the Committee we look forward to a more extensive engagement with NERPO on the modalities of the proposed insurance subsidy for the farmers. We also want to challenge farmers to take ownership of their government, by among other things, demand to contribute to formulation and implementation of policies and programmes meant for developing the agricultural sector†challenges facing the emerging sector" said Mr. Johnson
NERPO has already extended a request to meet with the portfolio committee to discuss modalities the farmers insurance subsidy and a myriad of other challenges facing the emerging sector.
NERPO is the official mouthpiece of South Africa's smallholder livestock farmers who are reported to own about 40% cattle, 67% goats & 12% sheep but only accounts for 5% market share in the red production value chain.
