The President of the African Farmers’ Association of South Africa (AFASA), Mr. Mike Mlengana wishes to congratulate Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma on her historic election as the Chairperson of the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, last night. Dr. DIamini-Zuma made history by becoming the first woman to head the Commission.

“We are elated by the historic election of Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma as the first South African woman to head the AU Commission. Her appointment is a huge milestone for South Africa and has undoubtedly hoisted the South African flag very high. As a negotiator of note, her in-depth knowledge of Pan-African issues and being a long serving Parliamentarian and Minister in the South African government, we have no doubt that she will do South Africa and the SADC Region proud” said Mr. Mlengana.

AFASA President has also extended his first to the newly appointed AU Commission’s Chairperson.

“It is our wish that one of Dr Dlamini – Zuma’s priorities for agriculture will be to make sure that African governments live up to the commitments that they made back in 2003; to implement the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme, under which they would spend at least 10% of the national budgets on agriculture and ensure that the sector growths at an annual rate of 6%”

AFASA is a representative and unitary body of all African farmers, which is committed to driving the establishment of competent and successful commercial African farmers of South Africa.
