Who qualifies?

Any unemployed young agricultural graduate who holds valid South African Citizenship and:

• Is aged between 18 and 35
• Belongs to a designated group
• Holds a minimum of three year diploma or degree in agriculture
• Has been unemployed for at least 12 months after qualification and
• Is willing to engage in the programme for 12 months away from home

Current status

Recent studies have shown that the agricultural sector is dominated by elderly people (over 50 years) and this undermines the future growth and development of this sector. Pulling in young agricultural graduates will ensure future sustainability of the industry hence increasing employment rate and income of the majority of the rural households. This will also ensure poverty alleviation in the majority of rural South Africa. The envisaged programme is in line and compliments the current government policy of Land Redistribution for Agricultural Development (LRAD).

At present many of the graduates of tertiary institutions lack the required skills to conduct a successful commercial farming venture. In most cases they also lack the required capital or collateral to qualify for loans to purchase farms or establish their own agri-businesses. Even those in the fortunate position of being able to qualify for loans very often they lack support that they require to ensure the success of their farming or agri-business ventures.
